Netflix Procurement Boss Calls for Strategic Value over Cost Savings

“We aim to inspire and empower more than just manage. We believe people can have a great impact when they are free to make decisions."
Snehal Satya Head of Technology Sourcing EMEA Netflix
Snehal Satya, EMEA Technology Sourcing Leader at Netflix, has been rewriting the rules of procurement.
In his thought-provoking keynote speech to open ProcureCon Europe 2024, he challenged the traditional perception of procurement as a cost-saving function. Instead, he painted a picture of a strategic business partner, capable of driving significant value.
Satya’s speech was rooted in Netflix’s unique culture, characterised by its "no rules rules” philosophy that was championed by co-founder Reed Hastings. “We aim to inspire and empower more than just manage," Satya said. "We believe that people can have a great impact when they are free to make their own decisions in their own work."
As Satya explained, collaboration is another key pillar of Netflix’s procurement strategy. He emphasised the importance of working closely with internal stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver solutions that align with business objectives.
Looking ahead, Netflix are embracing technology to optimise its supply chain and reduce costs.
In fact, investing in automation forms part of their key vision for the year ahead. "Our investments in automation and analytics have allowed us to make data-driven decisions, leading to increased efficiency and improved user satisfaction,” he said.
Building strong supplier relationships has also been a key priority for Netflix. "Trust is key," Satya added. "Be explicit about goals, expectations, and timelines."
By fostering open communication and collaboration with suppliers, Netflix has been able to create mutually beneficial partnerships.
Satya's speech offered a compelling vision for the future of procurement.
By embracing innovation, collaboration, and strategic thinking, organisations can transform procurement from a cost-saving function into a strategic asset that drives business growth.
